The Japanese Katana Sword

A defining feature of the katana is its distinctive, curved blade. It is worn with the cutting edge upward, allowing it to be drawn and used in a single fluid motion to cut or thrust at an enemy. This feature, along with its long grip to accommodate two hands, distinguishes it from the tachi, a similar sword that is used with both blades facing downward.

Another important characteristic of the katana is its wavy line, called hamon, that runs the length of the blade. This pattern is the result of a differential heat treatment process, known as yaki-ire, in which layers of clay are applied to the blade. A thicker layer is applied to the body of the blade and spine, while a thinner layer is put along the edge. When heated and quickly quenched, this creates two distinct zones that provide superior hardness and resilience.

In addition to the blade, the katana consists of a hilt (tsuka) and scabbard (saya). The tsuka is made from hardwood with a leather covering. The saya is a black lacquered wood container to hold the blade and is typically ornamented with brass fittings, including a koshirae, the decorative arrangement of fittings on the hilt.
