Why Choose a Bamboo Tee
Bamboo has been getting a lot of attention recently as a sustainable fabric with eco friendly properties. It is a soft and silky material that feels good against the skin, with anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic properties making it perfect for those with sensitive skin. It is also naturally breathable and wicks moisture away from the skin, making it ideal for sports or workout clothing. It is also wrinkle-resistant and is a durable fabric that will keep its shape wash after wash.
Our men’s bamboo tee is made from 70% organic bamboo viscose and 30% organic cotton for a super soft feel and amazing performance. It has natural odour control and is able to keep you up to 2 degrees cooler than cotton (although it will still absorb water – see point 3 below). It can be worn as a base layer or an outerwear garment, as it offers the same warmth and stretch that you expect from our other tees.
Bamboo is grown using very little water, meaning it does not need chemical fertilisers or pesticides. It is considered one of the most eco friendly crops, particularly when compared to cotton which is known as a “thirsty” crop and requires huge amounts of water to grow. It is a highly efficient crop that uses less land, and does not need ploughing or replanting which can lead to soil erosion.
Turning bamboo into fabric can be done using either a mechanical process, which crushes the plant and then uses natural enzymes to break down the fibres, or a chemical process, in which it is cooked with sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide. The former is a more sustainable option, but the latter does leave behind some residue that can be harmful to workers and the environment.
The bamboo fabric utilises microscopic holes in the fibres that allow air to pass through the material, keeping you cool and comfortable on hot days. The fabric is also supposedly anti-bacterial and fights odours, ensuring your top will stay fresher for longer and requires less washing which is great for the environment.
When choosing a bamboo tee, it is important to consider how the material was made as the process can have a big impact on the environment. It is vital that any bamboo you choose to buy is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, ensuring there are no harmful chemicals used in the production of the garment.
